The Hermitage: A Historic Site

Located on suburban Philadelphia's Main Line, The Hermitage was built on The Foerderer Tract, 90 acres of land that served as the country estate of the late leather tycoon, Percival Foerderer.

The historic country setting of hills, woods and streams comprising the tract remained untouched for many years.  In the surrounding area of Gladwyne, the picturesque landscape evolved into an exclusive community of stately homes.

On a neighboring tract, the Philadelphia Country Club became

the social center for leaders of the city's business community.  Nearby, the construction of rail service and a network of highways - including immediate proximity to the Schuylkill Expressway - made ease of city commuting a way of life.

The college communities of Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, Villanova and Haverford, with their outstanding facilities for advanced

learning, became the nucleus of thriving towns, with churches, banks, shops, restaurants, theaters, museums and

services in abundance.

In more recent years, the area has experienced the influence of major shopping malls, business centers, recreation areas and a variety of improved service facilities.  Yet, with the passage of time, the undeniable beauty and important cultural traditions associated with the Foerderer land have remained unchanged.
